Fixing Carbon frames

About a year ago I was at NYC Velo (don't ask me why I keep linking them, but they're an important part of this story) hanging around like I tend to do. Of course a lot my 'hanging' time involves trying to get things for free. Not new things mind you, but items like used tires for polo or odds and ends that ended up in the parts bin.

For a while, (at least a year plus) there had been a damaged Ridley Damocles in the bin just getting knocked around. There was noticeable damage on the seat-tube at the clamp and someone had over-torqued the front derailleur clamp and crushed the tube. The Damocles is a $2200 carbon frame and frankly, I've never owned anything that nice in my life. Snaked it (with permission) and brought it home.

So, I had a sweet dust magnet and it sat on my wall for a year. I had heard that carbon fiber (CF) bikes were repairable but there were very few people in this market. After a little research, I contacted Calfee out in CA and had the boys at Affinity box it up and I sent it out.

Just got the quote yesterday. I'm going to fix it. Doooopeness shall abound.

Interbike 2008

I've attended Interbike for the last two years running. Went with my friends from NYC Velo and did it DIY. Ran around with a bag full of new samples trying to make connections and sales. Not this year though. A lot of NYC heads and companies are there representing and taking it in. Some for the first time, some for fifth time, some just for a good time.

Look for coverage on the following sites:

http://www.fixedgeargallery.com/

http://urbanvelo.org/
http://johnprolly.blogspot.com/

If you're not familiar, Interbike is the bike industries annual convention. Takes place in Las Vegas. Unlike Eurobike, Interbike is 'private' and open only to industry particpants. What does that mean? Not a whole lot really. If you want to go, talk to the people at your favorite bike shop and ask them if they're attending. Chances are that won't mind putting you on their attendee list. Barring that, you could just tell the organizers that you're a media person and pay your way in. No worries and lots of swag.

Sophie Can Walk

I found this on Street Boners and TV Carnage. If you you're not familiar, SBTVC is the biproduct of Gavin McInnes and some other guy (Derrick Beckles, nice to meet you).

On YouTube.

Los Marcos Madness, October 4-5, NYC

Los Marcos Madness Flyer

The time has come. The world’s most dangerous polo team is about to return to New York City to eat you alive again. It’s time to start preparing your feeble attempts to dominate them. Bribery helps. Costumes help. Rampant chicanery and outrageous shenanigans will help. If you think you can beat LOS MARCOS POLOS at their own game, then you need to prove it. October 4-5. The Pit. See losmarcospolos.com for more details.

Weekend Recap

Stayed in on Friday night and worked on a hip-bag.

Worked a checkpoint for the METAL race on Saturday night. Brody and I took charge of the cutting checkpoint, located in front of a cemetery in Ridgewood Queens for about 3+ hours. Good times were had and blood flowed in a most metal manner. By the time we left there was blood, beer and sparks on the ground.

Slapdick Polo Starts Tomorrow! Metal Race II on Saturday Night!

If I hadn't gotten my shoulder torn up I'd be most assuredly attending. But I did, so the best thing I can do is send some prizes (shirts and stickers) down to RyanD, organizer supreme. NYC is going to rep pretty hard and the probably smush the competition (statistically, point-wise and in overall beauty.) But its cool, I'm rebuilding my B-52s collection and really need the time to get organised.

Perhaps I'll hit up the Metal Race II on Saturday night? Last year was supposed to have been rad as hell and this should be no exception. I hate metal and I'm considering racing/attending...

Downer day

Yah, so I just sorta wanted to get this post out of the way early. Its the 7th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, a most egregious bummer of a day.

I was in the city and at work (up in the 50s on 7th Ave, real far away from the WTC) that day. We watched the second plane crash on TV. Internet and phones went down for the day and we were let out early. On my walk to Grand Central Terminal (I was living in Connecticut at the time) you could look down Fifth Avenue and see the plumes of smoke. It was a beautiful, dry day too. Eerie. At the station, some people were covered in dirt and dust. They jumped on the commutter rail to leave the city and go home to their families. No one I knew died. One co-worker lost his father (I couldn't imagine that) but that was it.

The next day my father woke me up at 6am. "I'm not letting those bastards change my life" and drove off to New Jersey to go to work. I was just happy to have a day off and went mountain biking instead (plus I hated my job and wasn't exactly chomping at the bit to go back). It still hadn't really settled in. Sometimes it still hasn't. Its a downer day.

Super Champion on TrackosaurusRex

Well, one good turn deserves another!

Tyler Lepore, proprietor of Vancouver, CAN's Super Champion has a vignette (I'm not really sure what the proper name for a 4min movie is) discussing his motivations and mentality. Nice!

NACCCs

Congrats to Austin and Kym for maximum race victory this weekend in Chicago!

In polo news, New York didn't win for a change but Ottawa evidently placed two teams in the top three. Congrats to Brian, Robbie and Alexis!
